Victor Carman (M.S. ‘54 in education) received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Ohio School Counselor Association for his service as a school counselor. His advisor at the University of Wisconsin was Dr. John Rothney.
Stanley Krippner (B.S. ‘54 in speech) represented the African-Brazilian religions as a delegate to the World Parliament of Religions in Melbourne, Australia, in December. Krippner, a professor of psychology at Saybrook University, is an honorary member of Candomble and Umbanda, the two major African-Brazilian sects.
Maureen McGilligan-Bentin (B.S. ‘72 in elementary education), who teaches fourth grade at Marquette Elementary School in Madison, was named one of five 2009-10 Wisconsin Teachers of the Year, by State Superintendent Tony Evers. Colleagues and parents describe McGilligan-Bentin as a “force of nature” with “incredible enthusiasm” for conquering educational barriers for each child and advocating for students and education.
Colleen Schell (B.S. ‘86 in special education/behavioral disabilities) was named 2010 Elementary School Counselor of the Year, by the Wisconsin School Counselor Association. Schell has worked 23 years in the Oregon School District and has been at Rome Corners Intermediate School since it opened in 2001. She has helped form and facilitate groups on family changes, anger management, grief and loss, study skills, stress management, friendship, and health concerns. She also runs yoga, running and stamping groups.
Michael Dietz (Ph.D. ‘92 in educational leadership and policy analysis) has been appointed director of curriculum at Concordia University-Wisconsin. He is working on a new edition of his book School, Family and Community.
Kaleem Caire (B.S. ‘00 in education) was appointed president and CEO of the Urban League of Greater Madison. Caire co-founded the Next Generation Education Foundation, which provides after school, college preparation and leadership development programs for young men.
Rachel Rydzewski (B.S. ‘05 in elementary education), who teaches seventh-grade communication arts at Waunakee Community Middle School, was named one of five 2009-10 Wisconsin Teachers of the Year, by State Superintendent Tony Evers. Parents and colleagues praise her ability to engage and motivate a wide variety of students as well as her leadership and innovation.
